Week 4, Part 1: Bash Scripting 101 – Automating Your Way to Efficiency!

Hey Everyone! 👋 This week was all about Bash scripting – a tool I’d heard about but never fully understood until now. As someone diving deeper into DevOps, I’ve realized that Bash scripting is more than just a skill; it’s a necessity.

Why? Because it’s the Swiss Army knife 🔧 for automating tasks, managing systems, and dealing with the daily grind of DevOps life. From running backups to scheduling updates or automating system tasks, Bash scripting is everywhere in the Linux ecosystem. So if you’re aiming for a DevOps career (like me), learning Bash scripting is a game-changer.

Here’s a breakdown of what I learned and how it’s making me a little better every day! 🚀


#What to Learn in Bash Scripting for DevOps 🚀

1. Why Start with #!/bin/bash? 🤔

Every Bash script begins with the shebang: #!/bin/bash. It tells the system to use Bash to interpret the script. Without it, the script might run using a different shell (and break things).

Example:

#!/bin/bash  
echo "Hello, DevOps World!"

💡 Always include the shebang. Trust me, forgetting it is like writing a letter without a stamp – it’s not going anywhere. 📨


2. Variables: User-Defined vs. System-Defined 🧠

Variables in Bash come in two flavors:

  • User-defined variables are ones you create to store information.

  • System-defined variables (like $HOME, $PATH) are predefined by the OS.

🔴 Important: Avoid naming your variables in ALL CAPS – those are reserved for system use.

Example:

#!/bin/bash  
username="Yashraj"  
echo "Welcome, $username!"  
echo "Your home directory is: $HOME"

💡 Pro Tip: Use $ to call variable values. I’ve skipped it before and wondered why my script didn’t work. 🤦‍♂️


3. Math in Bash? Use expr 🧮

Bash isn’t a calculator, but you can use expr for basic arithmetic.

Example:

💡 Handy for tasks like disk usage calculations or resource monitoring.


4. Conditional Statements 🧭

Want your script to make decisions? Enter if, else, and elif blocks. Use [ ] for conditions and operators like -eq (equal), -gt (greater than), etc.

Example:

💡 Spacing inside [ ] is critical. Forget it, and your script won’t run. Trust me, I’ve been there!


5. The Power of $? 🤷‍♂️

$? stores the exit status of the last command. A 0 means success, and anything else means something went wrong.

Example:

ls /nonexistent-dir  
echo "Exit status: $?"

💡 It’s perfect for checking if commands succeeded before moving on.


6. Redirecting Output and Errors 📝

Separate your output (stdout) and errors (stderr) into different files for better debugging.

Example:

💡 This is a lifesaver when dealing with logs or debugging long-running scripts.


7. Loops in Bash 🔁

Loops make repetitive tasks a breeze:

  • While Loop: Executes while a condition is true.

  • For Loop: Iterates over a range or list.

8. Functions 🔧

Example:

💡 Organize your scripts with functions to avoid duplicating code.


9. Scheduling Scripts

Automate script execution with:

  • at Command: For one-time tasks.

  • Cron Jobs: For recurring tasks.

💡 Scheduling scripts helps automate backups, maintenance, and monitoring tasks.
